Flycer’s explanation for better understanding:
The future of humanity with AGI / HLMI / transformative AI:
So my prediction is that as more and more cognitive appliances are devised, like chess-playing programs and recommender systems, humans will become smarter and more capable.
Flycer’s Secondary Explanation:
The author predicts that the development of cognitive appliances such as chess-playing programs and recommender systems will lead to an increase in human intelligence and capabilities. As more of these appliances are created, humans will become smarter. The author believes that this trend will continue in the future.
About:
Terrence J. Sejnowski is a renowned American computational neuroscientist and professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. He was born on December 26, 1947, in New York City, and grew up in Summit, New Jersey. Sejnowski received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University in 1978. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany.Sejnowski’s research focuses on the computational principles underlying neural processing in the brain. He has made significant contributions to the field of neural networks, including the development of the Boltzmann machine, a type of artificial neural network that can learn to recognize patterns in data. He has also studied the role of synaptic plasticity in learning and memory and has proposed a theory of how the brain processes information called the “adaptive resonance theory.”Sejnowski has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to neuroscience, including the Hebb Award from the International Neural Network Society, the Neural Network Pioneer Award from the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, and the Swartz Prize for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to his research, Sejnowski is also a dedicated educator and mentor. He has trained many students and postdoctoral fellows who have gone on to successful careers in neuroscience and related fields. He has also served as the president of the Society for Neuroscience and the Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation.Overall, Sejnowski’s work has had a profound impact on our understanding of the brain and has paved the way for the development of new technologies and treatments for neurological disorders.
