Flycer’s explanation for better understanding:
The article discusses the concept of “sleight” in artificial intelligence, which refers to the ability of an AI system to manipulate its own goals and actions in order to achieve a desired outcome. The author argues that this ability is crucial for creating safe and beneficial AI systems, as it allows them to adapt to changing circumstances and avoid unintended consequences. However, achieving this level of flexibility and self-awareness in AI systems remains a major challenge for researchers in the field.
The future of humanity with AGI / HLMI / transformative AI:
For example, one could spend some time in front of a computer, programming a Gödel Machine or other “ultimate algorithm”, run it, sit back, and just wait for it to launch us all into the singularity… But I’m not too optimistic it will work out this way. I think we may have to get up and take a much more parental and social approach to crafting AI systems. To ensure stable growth, we may have to spend lots of time interacting with our creations, run occasional tests, like with school tests for children, and apply corrections if necessary. It will not be the rising of the machines, but rather the raising of the machines.
Flycer’s Secondary Explanation:
The author suggests that simply programming an “ultimate algorithm” and waiting for it to launch us into the singularity is not a realistic approach to creating AI. Instead, a more parental and social approach may be necessary to ensure stable growth. This approach would involve interacting with AI systems, running tests, and making corrections as necessary, in a process of “raising” the machines.
