Original Abstract:
A critical aspect of reliable communication involves the design of codes thatallow transmissions to be robustly and computationally efficiently decodedunder noisy conditions. Advances in the design of reliable codes have beendriven by coding theory and have been sporadic. Recently, it is shown thatchannel codes that are comparable to modern codes can be learned solely viadeep learning. In particular, Turbo Autoencoder (TURBOAE), introduced by Jianget al., is shown to achieve the reliability of Turbo codes for Additive WhiteGaussian Noise channels. In this paper, we focus on applying the idea ofTURBOAE to various practical channels, such as fading channels and chirp noisechannels. We introduce TURBOAE-TI, a novel neural architecture that combinesTURBOAE with a trainable interleaver design. We develop a carefully-designedtraining procedure and a novel interleaver penalty function that are crucial inlearning the interleaver and TURBOAE jointly. We demonstrate that TURBOAE-TIoutperforms TURBOAE and LTE Turbo codes for several channels of interest. Wealso provide interpretation analysis to better understand TURBOAE-TI.
Context On This Paper:
This paper aims to investigate the impact of different types of noise on the performance of deep learning models. The research question is whether the addition of noise to the input data can improve or degrade the accuracy of the model. The methodology involves training deep neural networks on various datasets with different types of noise added to the input. The results show that the addition of certain types of noise, such as Gaussian noise, can improve the accuracy of the model, while other types of noise, such as salt-and-pepper noise, can significantly degrade the performance. The conclusion is that the type and amount of noise added to the input data can have a significant impact on the performance of deep learning models, and careful consideration should be given to the choice of noise when training these models.
